Each year, many Festival of the Dead events, including The Official Salem Witches Halloween Ball, The Dumb Supper, The Vampire’s Masquerade Ball, Grave Spirits, Journeys to the Underworld, Voodoo Cemetery Gods, Ms. Firefly's School of Spirit Conjuration, and Dark Faerie Magick, are held at the famed Lyceum Bar and Grill, 43 Church Street in Salem, a haunted restaurant in the heart of historic downtown. The Lyceum is built on the site of Bridget Bishop’s apple orchard and it is said that at times you can catch the scent of apples in the air when wandering the upstairs rooms where events are held. Throughout the mid-19th century, The Lyceum was the site of many an intellectual speech or discussion designed for “mutual education and rational entertainment” of attendees and included such luminaries of the day as Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Quincy Adams, Henry David Thoreau, and Daniel Webster. This charming restaurant is also the location of the first public demonstration of the telephone on February 12, 1877, by Alexander Graham Bell which was originally created as a device to contact the dead. More recently, the Lyceum Bar and Grill has been featured on Best Of, a Food TV Cable Network show and was even the setting of a seance filmed by Showtime Cable Network. During the seance, which was organized by Festival of the Dead collaborators Robert Murch, Gary Halteman, Shawn Poirier, Christian Day, and Sandra Power, spirit orbs appeared in the photographs, a paranormal phenomenon, and the crew couldn't understand why the sound and camera equipment wouldn't work for over an hour! We knew. This same type of phenomena also took place during the Food Network taping and other media explorations of the space. The Lyceum is undeniably haunted and we think that Bridget, while sometimes mischievous, help give the restaurant the warm, friendly glow that permeates its atmosphere.
